The Basics

1. Bid the number of tricks you think you will win and the suit you want to be the “trump” suit. Bidding ends when everyone passes.

2. After the first card is played, one partner lays down their hand.

3. You must play the same suit as the first card that is played; if you have none of that suit you can play any card.

4. Each person plays one card and the highest card wins unless a trump is played, then the highest trump wins. This is called a trick.

5. The winner of the trick plays the first card for the next trick.

6. If the pair that won the bidding got the number of tricks they said, they win the hand. If they don’t, the other pair wins the hand.
